Of course, this means that an agent is less interested in you until you have already have done some work. A lot of the smaller publishers are owned by or affiliated with either five companies. Penguin Random House, Simon and Shuster, Hachette, HarperCollins, and Macmillian. Indie publishers are more likely to take on new un-agented people, but they can only print so many books in a year.
